Limelight by David Koppel revisits the legendary London nightclub of the same name on the fortieth anniversary of its opening. Set in a converted 1880s Presbyterian church on Shaftesbury Avenue, Limelight opened in 1985 and was hailed by The Times as 'Britain's most famous nightspot', soon becoming the beating heart of London nightlife and a magnet for the most influential figures of 1980s pop culture. Koppel, then in his early career and the club's house photographer, captured regulars from the worlds of music, film and the demi-monde: musicians, actors and clubbers alike, many on the cusp of superstardom, rubbing shoulders with London's most stylish and creative crowds. The book brings these candid archive images together for the first time, including many previously unseen pictures, and traces the early steps of a photographer who would later become a defining figure of Fleet Street paparazzi photography. As Koppel writes, it is 'a celebration of the nightlife of a time gone by, the start of a personal journey and an evocation of the irrepressible spirit of the 1980s.'

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
