On Instagram by photographer David Hurn brings into book form a body of work that began as a daily diary on social media. A maestro of the analogue age, Hurn turned to the smartphone and Instagram in his later years as a kind of contemporary equivalent of the rolling daybook: a way of looking at his surroundings in the village of Tintern in Wales and on his frequent journeys, of testing the eye, of paying attention to the small and the close at hand. The book gathers a selection of these images and reveals a photographer in his ninth decade still curious, still composing, still alert to the comedy and grace of everyday life: a cat on a chair, a flower against a wall, the slope of a roof, two people in conversation, the play of light on a kitchen surface. It is at once a portrait of Hurn's local world and a quiet meditation on how a long-practising photographer reckons with a new medium without losing the values of the old one.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
