Bangkok is packed with visual treasures. Some stand proudly as landmarks of the city. Others are hidden down winding back alleyways and in the warrens of old Bangkok. One such treasure is the FrieseGreene Club, perhaps the smallest cinema in Asia, with only nine seats.

It is in a converted shophouse surrounded by slightly dubious massage parlours, and it seems utterly incongruous to its surroundings. The owner allowed me to use it as a location for a photoshoot. As we finished our shoot, the cinema started to prepare for the evening screening, and as the images of the film were projected onto the screen, our model happened to pass in front of the projector beam, I quickly reached for my camera, and in a happy accident, the model seemed for a moment to be captured within the film itself. This collection is an homage to the magic of cinema, an ode to the FrieseGreene Club, and a celebration of beauty.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
