Varco Appennino (Apennines passage) is an exploration of the inner areas of the Italian Southern Apennines — those hidden, remote, away from the clichés and chronicles that often characterize this part of the country. The work is a dialogue with the 'Apennines dictionary' of the Irpinian poet and writer Franco Arminio, developing from the phrase addressed too many times to Donati by the inhabitants of the small villages he visited: 'There is nothing here! Why do you come here?' During the research, which began in 2016 and ended in March 2020, Donati traveled through the mountain ranges from Calabria through Basilicata, Campania and Molise, up to the border with Abruzzo.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
