Dmytro Kupriyan’s project aims to immortalize Ukraine’s highest point, Mount Hoverla, akin to Japan’s sacred Mount Fuji. Through hand-colored black and white photographs, he captures the essence of Hoverla and the Transcarpathian region’s culture and daily life. Drawing parallels to Hokusai’s “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,” Dmytro elevates Hoverla to a symbol of national significance, not just a tourist destination. His meticulous process ensures his photographs transcend time, becoming timeless works of art. By documenting the landscape, people, and traditions, Dmytro preserves a slice of history for future generations. His dedication to this project reflects a deep reverence for Hoverla and its cultural significance, inviting viewers to appreciate its beauty and heritage. “I want these photos to become such a work “out of time”, which would remain relevant over the years by such a old technic of hand coloring black&white photographs. This is a hand printed black and white photos hand coloured by me with oil paints”.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
