Box set of five books

The Hiroshi Sugimoto Collection includes the five books published by Damiani and MW Editions from 2014 to 2019 about five iconic series by the Japanese artist. Adopting different conceptual approaches, all these series investigate Sugimoto's obsession with the passing of time or, in his own words, the “fossilization of time”. 'Dioramas' (2014) photographs the galleries of the American Museum of Natural History, where artificial scenes look utterly convincing: each one is an elaborately crafted fiction. 'Seascapes' (2015) is an extended meditation on the passage of time and the natural history of the earth, made by photographing the world's seas for over thirty years; the set includes its first edition, now sold out. 'Theaters' (2016) shows theater interiors photographed with a large-format camera and no lighting other than the projected film, so that the screen becomes a luminous white box. 'Portraits' (2018) presents portraits of wax figures, such as King Henry VIII, alongside a handful of portraits of living subjects and memento mori, calling into question what a portrait captures. 'Architecture' (2019) gathers blurred, colorless images of modernist buildings that strip them down to their essence.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
