Pyramids builds on the Polaroid aesthetic of Mike Slack's earlier books Ok Ok Ok and Scorpio, completing a trilogy of stand-alone volumes that together contain 123 pictures. It records everyday details of what could be a recent past or a very near future — a dust storm in the desert, simple geometry, stairways and windows, schoolchildren on a field trip — quietly dramatic scenes energised by anticipation rather than nostalgia, presented as physical artefacts of fictitious events for the viewer to decipher. The title comes from three identical early-1970s office buildings in Slack's hometown of Indianapolis.
