Graphic design by Luc Delahaye

All 693 images of a series Luc Delahaye made over several years from details of photographs cut out of newspapers. For years he clipped the photographs that caught his attention as working documents; in 2006 the practice took on a life of its own, a proliferating accumulation that embodied a rather dark vision of the world. Only in 2020 did the material reach its current form: photographs of photographs, presented as enlarged details in a single format, without commentary or captions, drawn mainly from the New York Times and Le Monde between 2006 and 2012 and including news photographs, archival images and reproductions of artworks. An atlas of contemporary disorder and a questioning of his position as photographer and witness, a meditation on history, violence, beauty and our gaze.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
