Eight years after Storm Vaia, photographer Matteo de Mayda and writer Cosimo Bizzarri returned to the communities hit by the disaster, creating space and tools for residents to tell their own stories and portray the places they call home. In 2026, with the support of the Premio Basilico, they brought together around fifty teenagers aged 13 to 18 for three workshops developed with the artists Ruggge, Alvvino and Giacomo Covacich. Through mask-making, cyanotype and collage, participants explored the connections between their inner worlds and the ecosystems around them, weaving memories of the storm with personal reflections, confessions and dreams. The book extends de Mayda's ongoing visual research and explores processes of repair and how communities respond to social and ecological change.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
