Danielle Neu's debut monograph brings together photographs taken over the past seven years: fish and other life forms in aquariums and cages; portraits of actors, performers and artists, and fragments of their naked bodies; deserted interiors, among them a reconstruction of the bedroom from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Elvis Presley's airplane, the Lisa Marie, whose surfaces are covered by a protective layer of plastic. Each image engages with postwar American cultural landscapes and discourses, particularly those of Hollywood, where the desire for fiction manifests within reality itself. The photographs establish a recurrent dissociation between place and corporeality: a Las Vegas club of lacquered walls, neon lights and velvet seats, television screens reflected in a myriad of surfaces, a space of false depth devoid of human presence.
