Co-curated by Calin Kruse and dienacht Publishing for the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts, Leipzig
Bronze Medal, German Photobook Award

Published with the exhibition at the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig, the book shows a selection of international photobooks from the last decades, with a focus on the photobook as an art object and a storytelling medium. Its definition is as broad as photography itself, from unique handmade objects to larger print runs, from self-publishing and zines to rare, elaborately designed and bound editions; photography, material, binding, form and format together show the potential of the photobook as an artistic medium of its own. About fifty books are featured, among them works by Cristina de Middel, Paul Cupido, Rana El Nemr, Thomas Sauvin, Dayanita Singh, Rafal Milach, Tito Mouraz, Anouk Kruithof, Hajime Kimura, Milou Abel, Eden Bernal, Mathieu Asselin, Marco Marzocchi, Sergej Vutuc, Xiaoxiao Xu and Kosuke Okahara, as well as NOCTURNES by AM Projects.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
