Selected by photo-eye as one of the best books of the year

A raw and bewildering journey through the fringes of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Shot over two separate trips, during which Kim Thue lived for ten months in close proximity to a notoriously rough area of the slums, the black-and-white images dig into the livelihoods and emotions of their subjects through unsung tragedies, vulnerable integrity and chance encounters. Thue went to Freetown not as a photojournalist but as a stranger with a camera and an open heart, suggesting that the coexistence of beauty and dread is an ever-present theme of this vigorous and inclement city. The book includes an interview with Luca Desienna of Gomma Books.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
