I am a medieval monster hunter. I have been for many years now. It is a weird job that consists in hunting down monsters in medieval art, and more particularly manuscripts. The great majority of these books, written on parchment, were of religious nature — Bibles, books of prayers, theological treatises. But the devil is never far; he often lurks in the corner of the image, ready to tempt or assault the good Christian. The devil is the prototype of monsters — but there are plenty of others. Damien Kempf is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Liverpool.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
