Carlo Rusca's work may be an example of Heimat — the German noun with no exact English equivalent, an oblique reference to the place where you were born, where you feel at home. His refined black-and-white photographs of Locarno point in a direction that speaks of the need to investigate one's roots and the desire to recognize. It all started in around 2010 when Rusca left Locarno to study in Lugano. After school he worked in Hamburg and then in Brazil. In 2016 the return to his homeland brought before him a reality he knew well but remembered differently. His nighttime photography walks through Locarno, undertaken with the curiosity of a flâneur strolling among the traces of memory, became a therapeutic, unavoidable appointment. Turistica has become a book that accompanies us on a journey to a private and peripheral Locarno, where nothing happens, where everything could happen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
