Murmurings of the Skin' is an exploration of the human connection to the body, the intersection of bodies and technology and the human need for physical contact. Olivia Arthur has been making work that looks at people's relationship with their bodies, what it means to feel comfortable in one's own skin, and the importance of touch and intimacy. This work has included a series about young people, physicality and sexuality, stability and robotics, about touch, gestures, and solitude in COVID times. 'For me, part of the power of still photography is the ambiguousness of pictures, the ability to give a hint about a scene or event without being too absolute.' The work grew out of a fascination developed after being pregnant and feeling the body as a machine performing an incredible task. It became quite a journey that ended up taking the artist to make intimate portraits, create Muybridge-style motion series and find emotional connections with robots. Ultimately though the work is about people, our inner strength and our never-ending need for physical closeness.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
