Seeing the static, silent, empty landscapes, witnessing the overwhelming absence of life and confronting what remains after the passage of mega-forest-fires. It is not about material loss, but about the intimate apprehension of the emotional burden. The complexity of human perception is questioned here, through an adjustment mechanism that allows us to tame the brutal, the destructive. The way we set up a process to make Thanatos bearable. And our strength to seek beauty in absolute darkness. The project began in Australia and continued in France. It is divided into three stages. First, denial and shock in the face of the immense blackness. Then the hand-to-hand combat, the awareness and the confrontation with this new reality. And finally oblivion and abstraction. Life resumes its course, leaving room for a feeling of powerlessness, although forests continue to burn. Unique pieces: ballpoint pen ink on photograph, charred traces of burnt trees on photograph, collage of photographic fragments with burnt edges.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
