Architectural photography is more than a means of documenting buildings; it is a medium for the visual representation of ideas and notions of built space. Since the beginnings of photography architecture has not merely been depicted but interpreted, with buildings and their perception standing in a productive interrelationship. Early pictures by William H. Fox Talbot and series from the great French survey projects of the nineteenth century bear witness to this, as do the radical photographic view of Sasha Stone in the 1920s or Thomas Demand’s contemporary image constructions independent of real building forms. The book shows the development of architectural photography from the early days of the medium to the present.
