The American photographer Lucinda Devlin has photographed interiors of German spa facilities: places of “water rituals” where people are supposed to be cured of chronic illnesses and which are increasingly turning into leisure oases. They include nineteenth-century facilities (such as the Friedrichsbad in Baden-Baden), postwar ones (Bad Harzburg) and new buildings (Bad Liebenstein). The clinically clean rooms for massages, baths, examinations and rests are deserted. They are uncomfortable testimonies of a healing industry tailored to humans in which humans are nevertheless entirely subject to the apparatus, resembling the rooms of Devlin’s earlier series Corporal Arenas and The Omega Suites.
