In the summer of 1986 Konrad R. Müller was to help the young Gerhard Schröder win the state elections in Lower Saxony and become minister-president: Müller photographed Schröder for election posters. That year it did not work out, but since 1990 Schröder has won three state and two federal elections, always with Müller close by. For almost twenty years the portraitist has studied the portrayed. He has captured marked changes in his face and appearance. The photographs shown were taken almost exclusively on non-public occasions. Konrad Rufus Müller has been able to observe and photograph all German chancellors since Konrad Adenauer intensively; the volume on Gerhard Schröder continues this impressive series.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
