Contributions by Britta Schmitz and Dayanita Singh
What can a photographer in India photograph other than misery or exoticism? This question occupied Dayanita Singh after she had documented the social misery of her homeland for many years. She returned to the world she herself comes from, to India’s wealthy extended families and their noble residences. She photographed friends and their friends, on commission or on her own initiative, portraying high society together with its traditional and postcolonial symbols of prosperity. This self-confident elite is almost unknown in the West. Privacy gives deep insights into a closed world marked by close family cohesion, and closes with pictures of empty yet animated interiors.
