At first he was mainly interested in the people. But soon Bill Burke, who had travelled regularly to Indochina since 1982, noticed the fading beauty of the architecture in this region scarred by colonialism and war. His pictures of buildings, magnificent government buildings, factories, cinemas and petrol stations, at first look like picturesque images from a vanished era, but on closer inspection they movingly reflect the eventful history of a torn society. In Vietnam and Cambodia Burke photographed the legacies of the French colonial rulers and followed the traces of the devastating war against the USA and the slaughter of the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
