The creators of the photographs collected here are unknown. Nobody can say any more about the occasion of their making, the people and situations depicted. There are interesting and curious pictures, some of them masterly. One involuntarily wants to see in them the hand of an important photographer, and must then remind oneself that they come from flea markets or were dug out of shoeboxes. In anonymous photography the viewer is left entirely to his own taste and judgement. This volume contains the best and most interesting pieces from Robert Flynn Johnson’s extensive collection of anonymous photographs: quickly snapped and carefully calculated photos of people and animals, architecture and landscapes, the erotic, the cruel and the unsettling.
