Josef Koudelka had already designed a book of his photographs of Roma in 1968. It was to be published in Czechoslovakia, but the photographer had to leave the country for political reasons. In Paris a changed edition emerged: a selection of sixty photographs showing Roma from eastern Slovakia. It appeared in 1975 in France under the title Gitans, la fin du voyage, and in the USA, and became one of the most important photobooks of the twentieth century. For Roma, Josef Koudelka has revised and expanded his original design; the book now contains all photographs made between 1962 and 1971 in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain.
