Robert Lebeck and Rolf Gillhausen documented, on assignment for German magazines such as Kristall or Stern, the phase of decolonisation in various African countries. The accompanying social change was also captured by Malick Sidibé in numerous portraits of the self-confident youth of the Malian capital Bamako in the first decade after independence. And the photographs of the young South African Pieter Hugo address the consequences of the profound transformation of the continent through the long colonial period, and the global power politics of the present.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
