The artist Regula Engeler works with photography, using analogue cameras from the camera obscura to converted bellows cameras. She creates timeless images that show landscapes, architecture or people but also address our psyche and individual perception, at times distracted, at times full of love. For the book she selected 85 pictures from a body of work of more than 2,000 black-and-white photographs and arranged them as stills of a “head film”. Inspired by Robert Walser’s artist novel Räuber, she tells a dreamlike story in which people change gender and houses hide in thickets.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
