An extensive survey of the work of one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century, one of the great figures of modernity, László Moholy-Nagy, who conceived the arts as a whole and wanted to remove every hierarchy and separation between them. Moholy-Nagy wanted to be a 'total artist', theoretical and practical at once, creating in different media and trying to overcome the separation between art and life. He carried out a radical experimental practice without renouncing any artistic practice, moving between painting, photography and film. He also gave great importance to education, believing that man is the only builder of his own existence, convinced of the importance of art and its ideological and formative function. In his many texts the author sets out his aesthetic conception, both artistic and pedagogical, as emerges in his Aesthetic Theory of Light, structured around the regulating principle of light and grounded in its biological basis. Also available in English.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
