For more than a decade Petra Arnold has shadowed the Zirkus Starlight troupe and the Fischers, a family of performers, taking analogue photographs, mostly black and white, of their life behind the scenes. When she began, the Fischers were a large family; over time the company has had to downsize in a difficult business climate where few people can make a living as circus artists. Her pictures peek behind the curtain for a study of an existence between circus family and family circus, mostly outside the limelight: portraits and unstaged scenes that document contemporary history and the steady decline of circus culture.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
