Stephan Kaluza set out on an almost eight-month walk that followed the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to the North Sea near Rotterdam. Along the thousand-mile trek on the river's right bank he stopped every minute, after two to three hundred feet, to photograph the opposite shore, compiling a record of the river in 21,449 individual shots. Digitally assembled into a single six-inch-tall composite image, the pictures form a two-and-a-half-mile stream, a continuous panorama only digital photography made possible, that reinterprets the classical panorama and the myth of the Rhine as a German symbol.
