Introduction by Travis Elborough

Berris Conolly left work as a commercial photographer in 1984, and from 1985 to 1991 was mainly occupied with two major documentary projects in Hackney and Sheffield, both of which have been published by Dewi Lewis. Most of the photographs in ‘Field Trips’ were made during occasional breaks from the demands of these projects. They take us to all corners of Britain and explore a wide range of landscapes, urban and rural. They encompass both the beautiful and the mundane. For Berris there was generally no conscious or formal theme to the project, other than to record what caught his attention. However, in Wales he followed the 12th century circular route described by Gerald of Wales, accompanying the Archbishop of Canterbury on his recruitment campaign for the partly successful Third Crusade.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
