The photographs in The Traveller span a period of 15 years or more and cover Harvey's many journeys from the South Pacific through Asia to Paris, his European spiritual home. Part fiction, part autobiography the book deals with Benge’s recurring themes of loss, and, as his self portraits attest, impermanence. The Traveller is a personal reflection of the world where strange connections occur. Benge’s photographs never offer answers, only questions to tempt the curious. His democratic view is an acerbic, wry response to the world in free-fall where nothing is certain. Yet there is humor, affection, hope and unexpected beauty.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
