Introduction by Rogan Taylor

For every football fan the World Cup Finals are the most extraordinary celebration of the game. As we look forward to Brazil hosting the 2014 tournament, this outstanding collection of photographs by Alistair Berg captures fan culture around the world at its most vibrant and characterful. First published prior to the 2010 World Cup, the book is a unique chronicle of a 20 year period that saw enormous changes in football and a massive surge in support for the game. It covers five World Cup Finals as well as grassroots football, from pub teams and Sunday league to children playing barefoot in the streets of Brazil or in the townships of South Africa. Images are drawn from every continent and a chapter is devoted to each World Cup from 1990 to 2006. There is also a special extended section on the game in Africa. Despite the variety of assignments he has undertaken, Alistair has always photographed football culture. He has continued to see the World Cup Finals from the perspective of the fans as they make their pilgrimage to the mecca of the world game.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
