Ana M. El Tesoro begins with a domestic archive found in the attic of Ana M., a resident of Llaranes, a workers' settlement built in the 1950s around the state-owned steel company ENSIDESA in Avilés, Asturias, on the northern coast of Spain. Conceived under Francoism as a model of industrial and social order, the neighbourhood embodied an ideal of progress that extended beyond the factory into everyday life. Rooted in the artist's personal relationship with both Ana M. and the territory, the project explores what remains outside this official representation. Bringing photographs, objects and domestic traces into dialogue with institutional and industrial records, the research constructs a counter-archive whose associative logic is shaped by Ana M.'s experience of schizophrenia, with ambivalence sustaining the coexistence of contradictory meanings. As the industrial landscape undergoes demolition and transformation, other histories emerge: the documented but unmarked mass graves of Francoist repression, the domestic labour that sustained industrial production, and the violence exerted on women's bodies.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
