This book is the result of an initiative of the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Archive to show a wide selection of portraits made by the celebrated author between the 1930s and 1950s. An exhibition, this book and a web page were produced in order to identify the people portrayed with the help of the public and readers. Through this playful approach to the archive as a container of collective memory, the portraits invite a reflection on the photographic medium and on the activation of the image through interaction with the public. The book plays with identification cards and the data of the file itself, including the information of the portraits already identified and of those who identified them. Its interior, its cover and the design of the shirt, which turns into a poster alluding to those of publicly wanted people, offer a different approach to the work of this extraordinary and iconic Mexican author. Cataloguing the photographer's negatives, the archive team tried to guess who these characters might have been and invented stories for them, and then decided to help them escape their anonymity with the collaboration of as many people as possible.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
