Exótica is a body of work that reinterprets and follows the imaginary steps of the adventurers and explorers who undertook complex and dangerous expeditions in the "wild territories" of Mexico in the 19th and 20th centuries. These expeditions led mainly to great scientific discoveries, documented in valuable chronicles and logbooks and shared around the world. Born and raised in Mexico as part of the first generation of European migrants, the author finds a direct link between these famous explorers and his own family roots. The expeditions are also related to the eternal human need to find one's own paradise, which has a wide range of interpretations: the Bible presents Paradise as a garden in which the first couple live free of disease and death; in cosmological contexts it describes the world before it was tainted by evil; in the tourism industry the exotic is a tool to escape daily routine; and in art history it has appeared in many ways, mainly as the opposite of hell.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
