The proliferation of plastic in the toy industry began around 1950; until then almost all toys were made of wood or metal, and today 90% of the toys produced are plastic. Like much of our waste, toys, after a short useful life, find their way into the oceans, where they drift on the currents until they run aground on beaches and coasts around the world. Plastic being indestructible and non-biodegradable, every plastic toy ever made still exists in one way or another: they do not disappear but break down into ever smaller fragments. The project seeks to give new life to more than 450 toys found and recovered on Mexican beaches between 2013 and 2018, as part of beach-cleaning projects with educational, scientific and social components.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
