Exilios is a photobook inspired by the story of three women who, in the middle of their lives and after suffering years of violence, decided to leave their partners and even the whole world. The book is composed of two interspersed books, creating a narrative that visually builds the work by interweaving the stories of three very different places in Mexico. The landscape and the design of the pages create a dramatic and poetic scenario of the lives of these three women, who isolated themselves from the world for different reasons and who are the metaphor to address central issues of identity, gender and the life of women in Mexico. Adela barricaded herself in her room and devoted herself to letting her life disappear. Berta and Mercedes, on the other hand, left their village to settle in the middle of nature; accompanied by their children and without any kind of service, they forged a life and a territory of their own, which today, almost at the age of 80 and almost alone, they refuse to leave. Each of these women sought in exile the freedom that, due to their gender, was denied to them.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
