This book approaches the Muxes in an exploration of the cultural, sexual and personal identity of the author and of this community in Oaxaca. Since pre-Hispanic times Zapotec culture has accepted homosexuality, giving it an active role and an open position within society, far more significant than anywhere else in Latin America. The Muxes are organically integrated into the social and economic fabric of the community, making a statement about duality as a deeply rooted characteristic of the country. Nelson Morales developed the project over almost eight years, photographing in his own community in the isthmus of Oaxaca. Like a film, Musas Muxe is built from the process of creating the work itself: over time the author approaches the subject, the photographic medium and his way of relating to the Muxes in different ways, creating and recreating the imaginary of the women portrayed and of himself from shifting perspectives that go ever deeper into the many layers of Zapotec culture. Sexuality, identity and gender are key themes in society.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
