In San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, for 500 years, on 24 September, the day of Our Lady of Mercy, a pilgrimage is held and each family builds its own "Panzudo", a figure that represents sins: the more a person has to atone for, the bigger and uglier the costume. Combining texts and images, this photobook leads us through the tunnels of domestic space to explore its psychological density and the complexity of childhood, merging it with pre-Hispanic traditions and apocalyptic visions of the Catholic religion. From a contemporary viewpoint the series addresses the cultural syncretism that marks the history of Mexico. The Panzudos still dance every year through the streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas, now with Halloween masks and Chinese fabrics, creating new characters of today's Mexican imaginary.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
