English translation of a dialogue between Charles Fréger and Mariko Takeuchi
Made together by the photographer Charles Fréger and the manga artist little fish. Seijinshiki is the coming-of-age ceremony in Japan in which 20-year-old women dress in formal kimono, known for their tactile aesthetics and materials. Fréger photographed these women in front of self-made backdrops depicting classical Japanese paintings. The irritating, odd element is the recurring peace or victory sign the women project to the camera, a small gesture that, like so much of Japanese culture, becomes a bridge between old traditions and contemporary pop elements. The manga by little fish tells of two girls excited about their coming ceremony, dressing up, drinking and then falling asleep as Kuroko, a dark figure, comes to strip them of their beautiful robes, a loaded ending that symbolises the loss of naivety and innocence.
