Hitoshi Fugo lies on top of a circular water tank and closes his eyes, wondering whether the instant will come when he feels not enveloped by the universe but enfolding it, the instant of liberation from the uncertainties of living and the fear of death. On the circle linear time and circular time intersect, and the ordinary world and the extraordinary melt together; sounds exist in abundance, wind in the grasses, birdsong, a gunshot, a child's wail, water drops, and his mother's voice, perhaps an illusion. Fugo often uses photography as an extended meditation on a single subject, as in his previous book on a frying pan. Here he set his camera on a small circular patch of artificial grass and took all the pictures from a slightly elevated viewpoint looking down at the curve where it meets the earth. From this starting point the photographs range widely in subject and style, from straightforward portraits to Surrealist play with objects, including three women in swimsuits who seem to swim freestyle across the circle, finding new ways to present the familiar as unfamiliar.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
