In 2010 Shunji Dodo began photographing the Sea of Japan with an 8 x 10 camera, and while processing his prints he happened upon a vintage print from his college days, a coarse-grained picture of the young photographer he had been, furiously photographing anything and everything with unresolved anger at the chaotic times. He could not resist looking for more: the prints made between 1968 and 1977, with almost none left from those shot in Busan, Omuta and Okinawa, so he made contact prints from all the negatives he could find and printed them again. Back then he photographed everything he saw without rule or order, as if he wanted to own it all, compensating for immature skills with passion and the energy to act; through the photographs he rediscovered the feelings he held when he took them, sentimental at times, astonished at others. The book gathers these early photographs from the decade in which, as he writes, his later work took root.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
