Art direction by Shin Akiyama
By recognising the uncertain world, Atsushi Okada finds the existence of the self; by finding the uncertain existence of the self, he recognises the world again; and, to recognise something hard to recognise, he takes photographs. The book can be viewed in several ways: as a response to the disasters that shook Japan in 2011 and at the same time as the photographer's personal diary, an attempt to express the inexpressible in a lyrical, abstract manner. Nature is the constant focus, along with photographs of areas hit by the 2011 tsunami, and in the wake of the Great Tohoku Earthquake Okada questions the relationship between humans and nature. These photographs of natural phenomena are interspersed with studio images of women in various states of undress, which it is hard to take as a representation of unconditional beauty: Okada does not offer a simple statement about the world but recognises the difficulties of his subject and builds them into the work.
