Art direction by Hideki Nakajima

A quiet monochrome world carved by the gaze of a travelling photographer. The book gathers 69 pictures selected by the photographer Yoshihiko Ueda from Kozo Miyoshi's work, including the series See Saw and Conservatory made while he stayed in the United States from 1972 to 1983, and later groups up to the present. Made as he keeps travelling, as if enticed by images in his mind, the photographs never show the unreal buoyancy common to travellers' views: they are always courteous, respectful of the everyday time of the places visited and photographed close to it. Cacti, cherry trees and people living in those places are held in the ordinary time that flows on the subjects' side; so fine are the prints that one can almost hear their presence and breathing, and the subjects seem to stand quietly, with carefree expressions, as if having realised their own fate. It is Miyoshi's first popular-edition photobook and a volume that gets back to the origins of the photographer.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
