What is left when everything is lost? Photographs and memories: happy days kept in a Polaroid, people's recollections. The LOST&FOUND PROJECT searches the sites of lives that once were for family photographs swept away by the East Japan tsunami of March 2011, and sets out to save them and help the people who lost homes, loved ones and children. A patchwork of memories, a living tableau of souvenirs: faces, hands, smiles. Whether or not each photograph went back to its owner, Munemasa Takahashi writes, handling the vast quantity by hand and with care healed wounded souls better than any words, and taught him that a photograph is not just the materialisation of a moment but an exchange of souls. Saving a past, as one supporter puts it in the English text, is helping the future, mending and salvaging dreams.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
