Quiet landscape photographs that hold the breath of history. The book is made up of pictures Tomoko Yoneda took in Hungary and Estonia in 2004, first conceived as one volume of the photobook series In-between by EU-Japan Fest. Ten years later it was reedited as a large-format photobook with 38 previously unpublished works added. Yoneda's work rests on photography's basic role as record while projecting onto what is visible the memory and history that lie in it. Hungary, rich in water, and Estonia, deep in forest, are two countries that after a long era of resistance gained independence and democracy with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Behind the calm landscapes lies the violence of history. Issued on the tenth anniversary of the shooting, in a world of shifting politics and with a thought for the generations to come, it is presented as a critical photobook.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
