Visual Arts Photo Award 2014, Grand Prize

Winner of the Grand Prize at the Visual Arts Photo Award 2014, this is the first photobook by the young photographer Junko Yonezawa. Her quiet square-format colour pictures catch, within the ordinary field of vision, an otherworld that passes by for an instant. Daido Moriyama compares leafing through her colour prints to reading a book of wordless poems, with a clear, hard emotion that reaches the viewer, while Kotaro Iizawa writes that a ripple of delicate feeling spreads from the gaps between the photographs and ensnares the viewer: a transparent sadness, and a sense that life and death are joined somewhere like a Möbius strip. In her afterword Yonezawa writes of the figure ahead who is just about to turn around, of the sudden nostalgia that strikes the chest when the soul remembers a deep sorrow, and of being captivated by the shapes that formless things take on, in search of the nostalgic sadness of being here and now.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
