Masquerade is a series of self-portraits in which Tomoko Sawada completely changes her make-up and hairstyle for each photograph. Although she becomes a different woman on every page, the self-portraits always maintain the concept of outside and inside. All of the photographs fit a particular type: Sawada's clothes and heavy make-up, as well as the way the photographs are shot, make them look like pictures of the hostesses displayed outside a kyabakura club, most likely in one of Japan's seedier neighbourhoods. A kyabakura club is not a brothel but a place where men pay to talk to and drink with women made up in exactly the style Sawada has chosen; the 50 faces turn the book into a stage for masks and masquerade, and Kishin Shinoyama wrote on the obi that he likes them all and would choose every one. She has gone as far as completely whitening her face, which heightens the difference in hairstyle and make-up from one photo to the next. Masquerade could be read as a comment on Japanese culture, but it is also a masterfully executed performance. Tomoko Sawada won the Ihei Kimura Photography Award, and in 2004 the International Center of Photography Infinity Award (Young Photographer category).
