The result of Naoki Ishikawa's incredible effort to photograph a series of related cave paintings scattered across the globe. Between 2000 and 2007 he travelled to Hokkaido (Japan), France, Norway, Algeria, India, Australia, America, Mexico and Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) in search of these paintings. He returned with rich colour photographs not just of the cave paintings themselves but of their modern context. Ishikawa has an eye for detail that communicates a sense of place, and in this way he is able to show the relationship between the cave paintings and the cultures that have grown up around them. New Dimension is thus an artistic study, a travelogue and also a meditation on the development of human civilisation. In his essay the critic Shino Kuraishi recalls that Ishikawa became the youngest climber of the highest peak on each continent in 2001, yet denies being an adventurer, and notes that the sequential structure, which stresses the process of reaching each painting, echoes the cave as a place of animistic ritual and theatre; the animal figures and especially the hands appear as vivid traces linked to today's images.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
