Photograph collects the photographs taken by the artist Jiro Takamatsu (1936-1998) between 1974 and 1991 under the name Photographs of Photographs. Takamatsu led Japanese contemporary art in the 1960s and 1970s, and his conceptual works, which make viewers think or think themselves, built new relations between the work and the world. He is known as a visual artist, but he was also interested in using photography, and in this, his only series of photographs, he re-photographed some of his own family photos. In some shots the photograph is lying on a table or hung on a wall, in others it is in someone's hand, but in each image the photograph is positioned in such a way that the original image is slightly distorted. Often light bounces off the reflective surface of the print just at the point towards which the eye is drawn. By using photographs of everyday situations, he removes the message-bearing quality of photography and any metaphor, and asks whether the plain physical existence of a photograph, a mere unevenness of light and shadow, can stand as an artwork through the visual illusion of the photograph. Technically sharp and printed in rich monochrome, Photograph is a thought-provoking experiment about the limits of photography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
