Art direction by Hikari Machiguchi
Yuhki Touyama was born in 1983, which makes her part of a new generation of female Japanese photographers. Like some of her peers she documents her personal life through photography, but she uses the format as a platform to express something deeper. She explores youth, friendship, sexuality, family and urban living, all in a serious yet undramatic way. It is clear that Touyama is observing, not performing, and her muted black-and-white photographs suit this tone well. In her afterword she writes of a girl who sang that the boundary line had disappeared, and died: an unforgettable line was drawn for her, and it made her notice the time and existence left in photographs and want to keep the present. Unable to look straight at the joy and sorrow, the life and death happening before her, she found that her memories, seen through the viewfinder, came to be made entirely of photographs, perhaps the only way she could breathe. She published Line 13 at 25, but it is a statement well beyond her years.
